The letter was addressed to white members of the clergy, who accused King and his allies of extremism. King was disturbed by the label at first, but then found great satisfaction in it. He went on to ask, “So the question is not whether we will be extremists, but what kind of extremists we will be. Will we be extremists for hate or for love?
